DM600PVR and analog modem.

Wir haben aktuell ein Problem mit dem Board und arbeiten an der Lösung...
  • Hi all! I own this little STB (GP v4.40) and I want to use the analog modem to connect to the Internet, using the well known RJ-11 cable. Unfortunately, I can't have an ADSL connection here.

The problem is that I can't see any relative setting in Gemini's menu. Why is that? Someone told me that the modem line is actually deactivated by Gemini Project, because nobody cares for it. Is that true? I can't believe it!

There are cases where is essential. Here I have an ISDN telephone line and I would like the idea of connecting my box to the Internet, while the second phone line would be still available for calls. Also, I don't like the idea of Internet Connection Sharing, because it requires an open and working PC. I prefer the independent Internet access for my little diamond.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

There are too many receivers out there, but the best of all is my Dreambox!

  • i guess the reason is the availability of broadband connections in germany, so we have no reason to use any kind of dial services

  • superas:
Maybe you can use an ISDN router like the D-Link DI-304 (don't know if that one is still available or useable in your country).

This small standalone device would manage the internet connection and provide access from your own LAN.
That means, you can connect your PC and your Dreambox via Ethernet to the ISDN router and get internet access through it.
There is no need to have your PC running, as the router manages all itself.

Ask a local IT specialist about such a configuration and the costs for a suitable ISDN router.

no, Modem is not available in any Dreambox image - Gemini dose not deactivate anyting

if you do not believe me ask DMM Support

It is not true, here is what DMM support says:

    ============================
    Dear xxxxx,

for using the analog modem you have to press the blue button on the remote control to get to the Plug-In-menu. here you can select
"modem internet" and enter the dial-in-no. and the user-data. By pressing the green button you will be connected to the internet. This should not effect the lan-settings so that you will still be able to record .

If this menu does not appear you are not using our original software. Please find information about connecting via analog modem with this
software on the homepages where you downloaded the foreign software.
    =============================

So, i ask once more, why gemini deactivated analog modem support in their images ?

  • Hello all and happy new year! Sorry for the delay, but I had to make some research and tests before posting! Here are my answers:

maxl: This is not true, modem is available. There is a plug-in which works perfectly at least in original image. I am trying to make it work in Gemini too. It is called Enigma-modem and you can download it from here:
    http://dreamboxupdate.com/open…-modem_0.2-r1_powerpc.ipk
    http://dreamboxupdate.com/open…-modem_0.3-r0_powerpc.ipk

Hackfresse1703: I agree with you, but the availability of broadband connections in Germany is not a reason for Gemini team to do not support the analog modem. If there is hardware available it must be supported and be utilitarian. Except if Dreambox receivers designed only for Germany.

kalehrl: The purpose of the modem is to connect the box to the Internet independently. Analog modem is there for serving user's needs.

helig: Thank you very much for your suggestions. An ISDN router like DI-304 will be my first goal if I can't get the modem work in GP. I know how to connect it and it is compatible with Greece's ISDN network. I have found it in a Greek e-shop, but it's too expensive (>120 €). Probably, I will search in e-bay.de to get a cheaper one (CISCO or D-Link).

Andrija M: My friend, your post gave me the opportunity to search more and find this plug-in, Enigma-modem. I posted your answer in a greek forum and someone told me this:

"The company is refered to plug-in enigma-modem. Various alternative images don't have it installed by default, but this doesn't mean that you cannot install it. You can possibly find it in the addons of every image or download it from the online update server of Dreambox. The link for the plug-in http://dreamboxupdate.com/open…1.5/dm600pvr/experimental
The file is in ipk format. You copy it in /tmp directory and you install it via telnet with the command ipkg install /tmp/filename.ipk or you can install it with the program Dream Control Center. I hope that the image you have installed has not removed something else so that the plug-in can't function
    ".

  • Good morning guys! I have made some progress in analog modem issue due to important help I have received from a greek forum. Well, first things first. I have downloaded and installed (via telnet) the "Enigma-modem" plug-in in the .ipk format. I had Gemini 4.40 installed in my box and indeed the "Modem Internet" entry appeared in the plug-ins list of Blue Panel. I set the username, password and dial number and pressed the green button ("Connect"). The connection was trying to start but immediately was being interrupted (in less than a second). Probably, something was missing.

There is a file in /usr/lib/ipkg named status. Inside this file there is information about the installed packages in your image. Gemini team has removed (or not include) some packages necessary for analog modem function. We have to add ppp support in kernel configuration. The solution is to install one-by-one the following packages with that specific order (due to dependencies):

    1. http://dreamboxupdate.com/open…tt_2.6.12-r4_dm600pvr.ipk
    2. http://dreamboxupdate.com/open…hc_2.6.12-r4_dm600pvr.ipk
    3. http://dreamboxupdate.com/open…ic_2.6.12-r4_dm600pvr.ipk
    4. http://dreamboxupdate.com/open…nc_2.6.12-r4_dm600pvr.ipk

Install the same way: Upload the files in /tmp directory, connect via telnet and then use the "ipkg install /tmp/filename.ipk" command. After that, do a restart in your box and then install the "Enigma-modem" plug-in. If you want, verify that the packages are correctly installed by looking in the /usr/lib/ipkg/status file or by using the "ipkg list_installed" command. Go to Blue Panel-->Modem Internet and fill-in the username, password and dial number of your internet connection, then try to connect (green button). You should see "Dialing...". Try and give us your valuable feedback.

  • Hi,
i'm having exactlly the same problem, but i own a dm800, do you know where can i get the enigma modem .ipk and the ppp .ikp files for my model?

    Thanks

  • Good morning guys! Personally, I didn't manage to make the internal modem work. I have installed all necessary packages and the enigma-modem plug-in, but my modem cannot call. I have an RJ-11 cable connected, the "Modem Internet" entry appears in the plug-in list, I press the Connect button, it says "Dialing...", but no actual call.

I have also tried with original DMM's image for 600PVR, which has already installed the ppp packages and the plug-in. I have tried with other images too. For example, "Nabilo Darkstar" image has already installed the Modem Internet plug-in. Exactly same results.

Has anyone else tried the above instructions? Did he manage to connect via the integrated modem of DM600PVR? Thanks.

  • I think the problem is that your country is one of those that don't have a modem-compatible dialtone, so you must put command ATX3 before dialed number

  • Hello Andrija M and thank you for your reply. Yes, I have thought that from the first moment. I have thought that maybe the problem was the absence of a compatible dial tone (well known error in dial-up connections). But I don't know what exactly I should do.

I think that the file I should edit is /etc/ppp/dial.modem. This script is used to dial the modem. I have tried to edit it and add this ATX3 command, but I have received a "Dialing failed" message immediatelly after I press "Connect". I suppose that we need someone who really knows Linux commands and ppp configuration.

My friend, I see that you own a DM600PVR too. Have you tried the "Modem Internet" plug-in? Did you manage to make it work? Thank you.

Finally, I bought from eBay.co.uk (at a very low price) the DI-304 ISDN router from D-Link and I am very satisfied with it! This device is amazing and I can connect and disconnect on demand from any PC in my LAN! Obviously, I have connected the Dreambox via Ethernet cable to the integrated switch of DI-304 and the box can normally access the Internet independently.

Thank you all for your interest and your participation in the thread.

PS: The integrated analog modem doesn't work in any image. This is why Gemini team not even include ppp support. It's there for marketing reasons only. This is disgraceful!
