Swap File - How To

  • Swap File is very important to improve the processing speed of your box, highend CPU's have multi-levels internal cache, and it is recomended for any OS to have an active external cache/Swap Space. You can look at the Swap File as an extra space for the box to breez.

IMPORTANT - Please, do not set your Swap File in your Hard Drive, this will decreese your hard drive's life, and might cause your box to freeze/restart. This option is not avilable for the DM500.

  • swapping is not so easy over the network, you need a special kernel for that who supports loop devices,... There is a long thread on this because on a 500 this is the only choice, but unfortunately in German.

  • what exactly a swap file can do for me?

I have a db7025, with a internal hdd, but i never use the hard disk, and my flash mem of db is almost full ! I can create a swap in the hard disk or maybe ina usb pen drive to put all files and turn it faster?

can i boot directly from the usb pen drive?

I would like to have mora than a image to test ! and im my flash i now it won´t fix !

thanks and sorry for be so nooibe :face_with_tongue:

  • what exactly a swap file can do for me?

    >>> it extends the mainmemory where the processes are running, not the flasmemory where the binaries are located and all teh files, plugins,...

    >>>>no a swapfile doesn't help to fix space problems in flash, only if you have too many memory hungry processes running it will help to offload the mainmemory and prevent the machien from hanging if it is all used up

can i boot directly from the usb pen drive?

    >>> well, yes, Barry Allen supports also USB sticks or the internal harddisk as bootdevice for placing images there, but only CF is a real good choice.

The list of working USB sitcks is short, and you need an image with USB Drivers built into the kernel in Flash (like OoZooN), and lots of sticks don't work without USB hub in between, so using a CF card is recommended to solve your image space problems

  • -------------------------------------------------------------------
STEP BY STEP FOR DUMMIES LIKE ME ! DB 7025
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Stick your USB  - DB must be standby or turned off

run DCC software (in download setor u can have yours)

The first screen is the Network screen. In equipment check USB
    option... Click on reconnect

    http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/428/usb70150zf5.jpg

    1. in configuration menu, click SCRIPTS -
notice that the default script to mount usb shows:
    mount /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc /var/mnt/usb

so it won´t work ! change it to
    mount /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc /mnt/usb

    2. Now click on menu "Telnet"
choose FORMAT, check Drive USB option / as DISC - click RUN
wait ! it take a little time and gonna shows like that:

    http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1133/usb70151dl7.jpg

    REBOOT the dreambox !!!

recconect on DCC - goes to TELNET - MOUNT - RUN
    it will shows:

    root@dm7025:~> mount /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc /mnt/usb; echo ">>>
    DONE <<<";
    >>> DONE <<<
    root@dm7025:~>

OK ! if you wanna check it if it worked, click on TOOLS menu, Memory info, REFRESH

It gonnas show you how is it, mine look this way

    http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/8517/usb70152py5.jpg

Now, we gonna play with the DB BLUE PANEL

Press tyhe blue button - press again ! goes to SWAPFILE option
so choose - (moving to sides)
    enable/disable swap - yes
swap size (you choose - from the 8MB to the most you usb have, i.e. 1 GB)
    swap place: /media/usb/swapfile

press the yellow button (create swap file)
    a message will appear:
    Status: creat/delete Swapfile please wait...

It will take a longer, I guess how greater you choose, how greater you
    gonna wait !

So now when is it done, if you press the blue - you choose between
    active / disable the swap....

    http://img213.imageshack.us/im…590/20080518094138ah7.png

If you check your data about usb, on blue panel, goes to system info (4)
    usb/ide devices -

    http://img213.imageshack.us/im…787/20080518094518jd3.png

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    And is it people !

I hope the newbies like me, understand how it works, and
how to make it happens ! TKZ for all !

  • another important thing: there´s a way to upgrade my memory? cf card i guess... what exactly should I buy? (model, especification) and how to install it? TKZ !

No, it is not a good idea to put the swap file on hard drives, because the hard drive will never go to sleep, and if enigma try to acces it while it is in sleep mode, it can slow your box down and may also lock it up.

  • Hi,

I have mounted a 2 GB USB pen in media/usb and created a 64MB swap file on it.
When I check the swapfile menu it says swap active by 64MB but I haven't noticed any speed difference.
Should I notice any difference? If so, where?
I'm using Gemini and CCcam on DM800HD.

    Thanks,
    Tom.

  • your system becomes more "stable" in "critical" situations where the flashmemory gets to low but one does not feel more speed...

  • how much swap file is good for a 800HD I have 8GB flash i put 2x my ram and its 512MB !
is it better to have more swap or less ?

  • Type the word 'free' on the terminal login to see how much swap is used.
As long as you do not use application wich take up huge amount of memory, a big swapfile is not needed.
Swap is like an extension on your normal memory.

I created a swapfile, but as you can see it only uses less than 1% of it size.
If the system does not need it, it does not use it at all.
You can make it huge, but it will not realy speed things up.

Another example in comparison my ubuntu install with a swapfile of 2.5Gb & internal mem cap 3Gb

    Code
    Me@HARDY:~$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 3112136 3022484 89652 0 26960 2417672
    -/+ buffers/cache: 577852 2534284
    Swap: 2562356 5092 2557264

Again you can see that a swapfile is nearly not used.

BTW it is not the flashmemory, it is the mainmemory which as swapfile extends :)

And the Dreambox is now 64 Bit Linux PC. which means more then 30-50% of the pysical Memory as swapfile should be sufficient.

There are only reare cases like creating an nfi file backup where a minimum swap of 128MB is recommended (but even this is only 50% of the memory of an 8*)
